The Cure @ Sydney Opera House (2011-05-31)
It actually seems a but surreal that I'm typing this up while listening back on this recording as the Cure show I recorded back in 2007 was the very first show I ever recorded and while this recording isn't quite as good sounding it's amazing to think how far I've come since then. Back then I was some 19 year old snot nose kid who knew nothing. I basically took some shitty microphones into the gig hoping for something decent and came out with probably my most listened to recording. Today however, I've recorded over 500 sets and have quite a knowledge of what I'm doing and I have a bit of a following. It actually amazes me how far I've come and how much I've recorded since that August night in 2007. But enough of my nostalgia trip... this post is about The Cure in 2011.
So.. for some reason The Cure got announced to play Vivid Festival a few months after every other band got announced and with only a few weeks until the show actually took place. Luckily, I managed to get tickets (thanks to a very handy tip from a friend) pretty easily and for 3 weeks straight I listened to nothing but The Cure. They were set to play their first 3 albums start to finish so my playlist consisted of that (along with the b-sides of that era) and whenever I listened to it I'd have it on shuffle to try and defamiliarise myself with the order of tracks so that there would be some element of surprise in the show. It worked to some effect.
The show itself was something else though. It was just just fantastic. I don't know if it was the fact I was seeing The Cure again or because I knew these shows were special but everything about it was amazing. I honestly couldn't ask for anything more. I was expecting the three albums then a 5 song encore and I got 3 encores which totalled 14 songs. The second encore was by far my favorite part of the evening (even topping A Forest which has always been my must see song) because Charlotte Sometimes and The Hanging Garden were splendid. OMG heaven! Mr Smith, you can play here any time you want. I could honestly write pages about the show but I don't want to bore you all with the details so scroll down a bit and download the show and enjoy it.
