The Frenchman was on the wrong end of a reckless-looking tackle from Nigel de Jong after only five minutes and left the field on a stretcher, requiring oxygen to ease his discomfort.
Ben Arfa is on a season-long loan from Marseille, having joined Newcastle with a view to him joining permanently next summer. Newcastle will have to resign themselves to being without the 23-year-old for at least a large chunk of the season, however presently they have offered no indication of how long the winger is likely to be sidelined for.
A Newcastle club statement said: "He will undergo surgery Monday morning.
"Everyone connected with the club sends Hatem their best wishes for a speedy recovery.
"At this stage no time limit has been put on his expected return date." PA Sport
